Accommodation in El Paredon – Where to sleep
Whether you’re on a budget or looking for a more upscale experience, there are plenty of options available. Many accommodations offer stunning views of the ocean, easy access to the beach, and a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture.
El Paredon is an ideal destination for those looking to relax, unwind, and experience the beauty of Guatemala’s Pacific coast.
These 4 hostels are a great option if you are traveling on a budget or are looking for a social atmosphere. They all have a variety of rooms to choose from, including private rooms and shared dormitories.
Driftwood Surfer
The Driftwood Surfer is a popular accommodation option in El Paredon, Guatemala, known for its laid-back vibe and beachfront location. The hostel has a communal area where guests can relax, socialize, and enjoy the stunning views of the ocean. The area is equipped with hammocks, comfortable seating, and a volleyball net. It also has a bar that serves refreshing drinks and cocktails.
For dinner, they offer an all-you-can-eat buffet that serves international food. One of my favorite activities here was having a delicious breakfast at the terrace with ocean views after my morning surf session.
The atmosphere here is very social and though some people call it a “party hostel”, during my one-week stay here I found it to be a pretty chill place. The bar closes at midnight, so guests who want to party longer had to go to other bars or hostels.
It’s worth mentioning that The Driftwood Surfer carries out a project to protect and save turtles’ eggs. The selling of turtles’ eggs is a huge problem in the area, so this hostel created a shelter for the eggs, help release them into the water, and even buy eggs they couldn’t save from smugglers to get them back where they belong. The ocean.
This is a beautiful cause worth of being supported. You can make a donation and also attend the baby turtles’ release everyday day at 5:45 AM from September until December.
Hostel Mi Casa en la Playa
This place holds a special place in my heart since I worked here as a volunteer for 3 weeks. The rooms are pretty simple and dorms can feel a bit crowded, but this hostel doesn’t focus on luxury, but rather on social connections. It’s probably the easiest place to make new friends in El Paredon, since everyone chills on the communal areas.
These areas include a pool, the bar and a terrace. The hostel is located right on the beach, so the views are amazing. Also, don’t forget to try the food; everything is cooked at the moment and there are many different options to choose from. Oh, I almost forgot to mention they sell one type of Guatemalan beer for less than 1 dollar. Not bad, right?
Overall, Hostel Mi Casa en la Playa is a great option for travelers who want to experience the laid-back and friendly atmosphere of El Paredon without breaking the bank. The location, amenities, and friendly staff make it a top choice for backpackers, surfers, and anyone looking for an affordable and comfortable place to stay in El Paredon.
This is probable the less “fancy” option but, in my opinion, it offers the best opportunity to meet amazing people and get a more local experience. Free breakfast included is also a plus.
El Paredon Surf House
El Paredon Surf House is a surf-focused hostel located right on the beach, offering surfers easy access to some of the best waves in the area.
The hostel has a variety of rooms to choose from, including private rooms and shared dormitories, all equipped with fans and comfortable bedding. The hostel also has several communal areas where guests can socialize, including a lounge area, a rooftop terrace with stunning views of the ocean, and a beautiful swimming pool.
Since it’s primarily focused on surfers, they offer surf lessons and board rentals for all levels of experience. The hostel also has an onsite restaurant that serves delicious and healthy meals, including vegetarian and vegan options. The bar is also a great place to hang out and meet other surfers.
Cocori Lodge
Probably the best pool in El Paredon. Their outside lounge looks like a resort, with several spacious bungalows that are elegantly designed with modern amenities and decorated with locally sourced materials. It offers guests a unique and luxurious experience that is unlike any other in the area.
Cocori Lodge has an onsite restaurant that serves delicious and healthy meals made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. There is also a bar that serves a variety of drinks, including wine and cocktails. They offer morning yoga sessions, surf lessons, SUP and kayak tours on the mangrove.
Overall, Cocori Lodge is a great option for travelers looking for a luxurious and sustainable experience in El Paredon. The stunning location, comfortable accommodations, excellent food, and commitment to sustainability make it an unforgettable place to stay.
Food in El Paredon – Where to eat
El Paredon, Guatemala, is a small but lively coastal town with plenty of options for food and drinks. From traditional Guatemalan cuisine to international dishes, there’s something for everyone. I have to say I was surprised by the quality of the food and also the amount of options there’s to find in such a remote place.
Mind you that there’s no accommodation in El Paredon that offers a communal kitchen where guests can cook their meals (not even hostels), so it’s great to know that there are plenty of options when it comes to bars and restaurants. In addition, prices are absolutely affordable, so you can still travel on a budget and eat out every single day.
Please bear in mind that at all bars and restaurants you’ll have to wait quite some time for your food to be ready. Don’t get impatient and see this as part of the experience. It’s a great opportunity to just laid back and relax, talk to other travelers, maybe play some cards and enjoy the chill vibes of Central America.
The Driftwood Surfer
This hostel offers a buffet for 59 quetzales (around 7.6 dollars) with different types of international food every night. From Chinese food to Indian and French, they include vegetarian options as well. Keep in mind that you must sign in before 4 PM.
If buffets are not your thing, you should try their breakfasts options. This below was my favorite and while you eat on the bar located at the terrace, you might be as lucky as me and witness some dolphins playing around near the coast.
Soulfood Kitchen
A must-try in El Paredon. Their Asian food is to die for. Nothing to add, just go and try it yourself.
Hostal Mi Casa En La Playa
One of the main features of this hostel is its beach bar. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the views from the terrace are unbeatable. Though all food is delicious and cooked at the moment by lovely Guatemalan women, I strongly recommend you to try any of their pasta or pizza.
Cafecito del Mar
Lovely café where you can enjoy some healthy and international breakfasts options. Come here if you miss avocado toast or smoothie bowls. By the way, their strawberry smoothie bowl might be the best I’ve tried so far.
Rinconcito de Dina
You can’t leave El Paredon without eating here. It’s a local house that opens their doors every night to offer delicious, fresh, local food cooked by a Guatemalan family. You’ll even get to see how the food is prepared.
I do have to add that the place might not look good from the outside, it might even look dirty, but it’s a great place to have a local experience. Food is absolutely delicious, the owners are lovely, dishes are big, and prices really low.
Yoli’s Local Cuisine
Another local place you are going to love. With laid-back vibes, this place offers great food at even greater prices. You can get dinner for just 4 dollars.
